DJI Gimbal Overload Fix: What To Check First

What a DJI gimbal overload warning usually means, the common causes behind it, and when mail-in repair is the smarter next step.

By Drone Doctor

A DJI gimbal overload warning usually means the camera stabilisation system is struggling to move freely or hold the horizon correctly. Sometimes the cause is simple. In other cases it points to crash damage, a bent arm, a damaged ribbon, or contamination inside the gimbal assembly.

Problem explanation

When the gimbal overload message appears, the aircraft is telling you the camera system is under more resistance than expected. You might also notice startup twitching, a tilted horizon, vibration in footage, or a camera that hangs at an unusual angle.

Common causes

  • debris or grit caught in the gimbal frame
  • transport locks or accessories left in place
  • a bent gimbal arm after a light crash
  • damaged ribbon cable or internal gimbal component
  • impact damage affecting the camera mount or front shell

Simple checks you can try

  • power the drone off and inspect the gimbal for anything physically blocking movement
  • remove filters, lens guards, or accessories that may be too heavy or fitted incorrectly
  • check whether the issue started after a bump, travel, or a rough landing
  • try a careful gimbal calibration if the drone powers on normally and the camera still responds

When repair is required

Repair is usually the better option when the warning keeps returning, the camera will not centre properly, the gimbal feels loose or stiff, or there is visible impact damage. If the overload message appears with shaky footage or startup failure, the underlying fault often needs workshop inspection.
